This seems to be a common question people are asking themselves, some in my presence, which is why I felt compelled to write something on the subject. I’m pretty sure this isn’t a new concept either, wondering what you’re doing with your life, and I am sure there are many points in our human lives where we ask this of ourselves. It could be during relationship turmoil (or lack of a relationship, a romantic one anyway), it could be during money struggles (debt, loss of job, etc.). How you answer the question is the important thing.
While this might seem a little off topic for my blog and website, since it’s not directly about writing, writing jobs, or art, it is about life, creativity, and how we see ourselves and treat ourselves. Those are important things and will have a lot of effect on relationships and careers throughout our lives. It also helps to use aspects of art therapy in order to find your life focus/purpose, like creating a dream board. A dream board is basically a form of collage art.
Here’s What To Do
The first step in realizing what it is you’re doing with your life is to accept that you are good enough. You are exceptional just the way that you are. After that, determine what it is you want to do with your life. What you’re doing with your life depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to be successful in a career or relationship? Do you want to own a home? Once you determine these things you can start the ball rolling toward achieving these things that you want.
- Write down your dream life. Who’s in it, where do you live, what are you doing for a living? Write it down as if it is actually already here. “I own my own home in the city and I live with my fiance and our two cats. I work as a professional photographer and wake up happy each day.” That’s just an example, but you get where I am going with this.
- Create a dream board. Cut out images from magazines that show what you want to do with your life. If you want to be a novelist, include photos of books. If you want a home in the country, find a picture of one. If you want romance, create a dream board full of romantic images. keep your list and your dream board together.
Your next step is to look at both of these things on a daily basis. You need to visualize your end result, see yourself where you want to be. This is nothing in this world you can’t be or achieve if you want to do it and you set your mind to it.
So, what ARE you doing with your life? Make some goals and get on with living the life you want! It’s as easy as that.
